Local 9-year-old and her “Hazel’s Heroes” honors veterans and first responders

BELMONT COUNTY, OHIO (WTRF) — Hazel’s Heroes visited the Ohio State Highway Patrol in St. Clairsville today.

Hazel Koveleskie, a nine-year-old Barnesville girl, created a group that honors local veterans, police officers, and firefighters.

They give them “blessing bags” filled with snacks, pens, notepads and treats.

Hazel says she got the idea when helping her grandfather, Robert Infante Jr., who makes blankets for veterans.

I felt that I wanted to help him, so I started to help him, and then I said to him one day, I want to make a group. And then that’s how it started.”

Well approximately two weeks ago, they’d come in and provided a gift basket for everyone who works here at the St. Clairsville post. It was very rewarding to myself and the other troopers and dispatchers here of her program that she’s starting that involves first responders, law enforcement and veterans.”

Hazel’s Heroes have made St. Patrick’s Day treat bags for nursing home residents, blankets for veterans, and cards for the National Veterans Home.

Hazel also speaks to organizations about her group’s activities.
