MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (WTRF) — With school almost in session it’s important to get your students’ sleeping habits in order.

Bethany Maury, nurse practitioner for Reynolds Pediatrics in Moundsville, says good routines are the foundation of success for students.  She tells us how much sleep each age bracket needs.

“So generally, school-age children need anywhere from 8 to 12 hours of sleep a night, middle school to high school age usually tend to get less sleep because they’re more involved with activities but sleep is still just as important. So, we’re making sure we get those 8 to 12 hours so they can function well at school and succeed.”

Maury says no phones or technology one to two hours before bed is ideal for restful sleep.

She also says it’s important to establish a good pediatrician to track health, growth, and set up appointments your kids will need throughout the year.

“We do more than a physical, we monitor their growth, their development, make sure they’re meeting their important milestones. In addition, we can address any health concerns that you may have about your child including anxiety, depression, behavior concerns.”

She says sleep isn’t the only thing kids should monitor, eating healthy as well as being able to check in with their emotions is important for good overall health.

“Make sure you have open communication with them, that they’re getting their sleep, eating well. Make sure they have a good breakfast with protein in it, it’ll help them last through lunch and give them the energy they need.”

Maury says nutritious food throughout the day like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains will help keep your child’s energy levels up as they attend their classes.

Talk to your doctor about setting up a back-to-school appointment for your kids so they can achieve their dreams this school year.
