NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. (WTRF) — New Martinsville Police have a plan in place to slow down vehicles specifically in school zones and on day one, it’s already working.

Thanks to lots of help from the Wetzel County Commissioners and the Wetzel County School Board there are some new signs on the roadside in New Martinsville.

According to officials, 2 new radar signs out of 5 that were purchased are now installed on Route 2 in front of New Martinsville School. One sign is on the southbound side and the other is on the northbound side.

Officials say the Wetzel County Commission purchased 4 of the signs for $18,000 and the Wetzel County School Board purchased one of them for $4,000.

New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil says so far, the signs seem to be effective.

”I ran radar today this morning up here and I had not one vehicle that was speeding through here this morning. So it kind of slowed everybody down. You could see the radar sign going, dropping from like 29 to 15, real fast. So it was keeping people alert of what they were doing.”

According to Chief Cecil, there are still 3 more signs that need to be installed in different school zones and high-traffic areas.
