Marshall County Schools Celebrate First Day of School

Moundsville, W.Va. (WTRF) Teachers and students in Marshall County went back to school today as the 2024-2025 school year gets underway.

It was an exciting first day back at Washington Lands Elementary school, as the years long renovation project has been completed.

There is a brand-new gymnasium that was added to the building, which has its own ventilation system and generator.

Principal Julie Sturgill says it can be used not just for physical education, but also by the community.

“Back to school was a little more exciting for us today because our remodel is finally finished on the inside, we still have a few things going on outside. But we are excited to start the school year for the first year in three years not under construction. We had no parts of the building blocked off, everything was opened up, we had it done last week for our open house. We were very excited to be able to present that to the parents and the students today. The kids are very excited to be back. We had a big entrance for them this morning, bubble machines and streamers and balloons, so they were very excited.”

The school was originally built in 1976 and had open classrooms with no doors, which posed a safety hazard.

To better protect students, doors were installed in every classroom, so that the school can be locked down in an emergency.

Shelby Haines, the superintendent of Marshall County Schools, says that students will be able to receive more personal learning experience through the revamped intervention program.

Overall, teachers, students and administrators look forward to a successful school year.
