Asbestos removal at former Wheeling Inn progressing ahead of schedule

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — The asbestos removal at the former Wheeling Inn at 10th and Main Streets is actually moving ahead of schedule.

Officials say that portion of the work may be completed by September 16, which would clear the way for the next phase–the actual demolition of the old motel.

U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who was in Wheeling earlier this week, said she’s in the process of getting Congressional Directed Spending funds for that project.

We’re at the first step of helping the visitors bureau with the Wheeling Inn demolition, clearing that out, and making a new welcome center. These are part of Congressional Directed Spendings where I can really weigh in in Washington and say this is a great project. It’s much needed. So I was excited when I came around the corner and saw they’re beginning the demolition.”

The senator noted that the Wheeling Inn will be demolished to make way for the new Gateway Visitors Center, which will replace the current Convention and Visitors Bureau office.

She said it would enhance people’s entry into the city, allowing them to enjoy shopping, meals, or entertainment.
