STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (WTRF) – With Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s recent appointment of a conservator to Eastern Gateway Community College at the start of the month, the transition of their students to Youngstown State University is quickly approaching.

President Bill Johnson recently spoke to the YSU community, stating that historically the university has had 11,000 students and they are up 6% in enrollment from last year.

He says some of that spike can be attributed to EGCC students coming to YSU.

Johnson says that they have spent the last eight months adding 60-plus programs to YSU, which EGCC will be leaving behind.

”Like I said, very soon you’re going to see the big red Y go up down in Steubenville. Now, we’re hoping that that’s going to be right there at the location that Eastern Gateway calls home today. They are finished as of October 31 st . The buildings, the equipment, all of the stuff that belongs to Eastern Gateway – that’s got to be dealt with.  I’m telling you, I’m shocked at how much complexity there is. It’s almost harder to wind down a university system as it is to stand one up. Maybe even harder.”

The appointed conservator and governance authority will oversee the dissolution of Eastern Gateway Community College until the end of October.
