Steubenville, OH (WTRF) A brand-new mural depicting the Lewis and Clark expedition was dedicated today at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Steubenville.

Artist Kyle Holbrook, who recently completed several murals in Paris for the Olympics, brought his creative abilities and historical knowledge to create the new mural.

It honors the significance of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which was monumental in the formation of the United States.

“That was all uncharted area that they were going through, it was like going to the moon, I look at it the same way. This was such a monumental, gigantic journey.”

Jerry Barilla – Mayor of Steubenville

The mural emphasizes the historical connection to King Louis XVI, who led the sale of the Louisiana Purchase to the US Government in 1803.

This new mural highlights some of the figures on the expedition who are often overlooked, such as York, an African American slave who formed relationships with the indigenous peoples.

The mural also includes Sacajawea, a Native American woman whose guidance was integral to the mission’s success.

“When we’re in these divisive times with elections coming up, we are reminded that America was literally built on these collaborations and working together.”

    Kyle Holbrook – Artist

The mural will include a QR code that links to the Fort Steuben website to offer additional education resources. It was installed during the unveiling ceremony.

Steubenville is famous for its collection of murals, earning the nickname, “The City of Murals.” They can be found all over the city and tell the story of the town’s history and culture.
