OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – In the wake of the death of a 13-year-old football player in West Virginia, the collective consciousness is focusing on safety.

At Wheeling Park High School, head football coach and athletic director Chris Daugherty says the family and friends of that Boone County student have his profound sympathy and prayers.
Daugherty says Wheeling Park is using new technology to ensure safety on the field.

He says every football player’s helmet is equipped with sensors. They keep daily information on impacts that player has sustained.

“It will notify our athletic trainers immediately of a high level impact whether it’s frontal, side or in the rear, it will immediately notify our athletic trainers, whether it’s practice or a game, so they can take a look at that player, decide if the injury is significant enough, if it’s concussion, we’ve got to hold him out.”

Coach Daugherty says it allows them to coach and keep the players safe.

He says technology is out there in every avenue of life, and at Wheeling Park, they want to use that technology for the best result.
