Valley Lumberjacks: 2024 High School Football Preview

Most teams have starters to replace from last year. Valley isn’t one of them. They return almost a full offensive cast, including Quarterback Gavin Derby whose resume speaks for itself.

“I mean he puts up video game stats, he has over 7,00 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, and he was 2nd team all-state last year as a junior, and the guy puts his work in, the kid is a straight-A student, he’s a better kid than he is athlete, and what he does on the football field is crazy, sometimes it’s like having a cheat code out there.”

The human cheat code will have all his old weapons back in the passing game, with Joey Barr, Landon Jerrico, and Andrew Shaw all back as seniors.

“You can’t key on any one person, we have a spread offense, that is a force in the power-run game because we like running the ball, but with the weapons we have we’re going to get them going early and often.”

Up front, the Lumberjacks will bolster that running game with Aiden Daniels, Cameron Derico, Kreed Sycon, Owen Morgan & Ethan VanCamp.

“I knew last year our run game wasn’t going to be as strong because we we’re breaking in some new guys, our goal was get better throughout the season and then next year is our year, and we had a guy run for 1,700 yards and another for 800 yards so I would say they improved throughout the season, last year we had some problems starting games strong, and we’d finish them strong, and we’d make comebacks and end up winning but we’d get down by 2-3 TDs early, and 2 games went to OT after being down 3 TDs last year, and they were young, but this year we want to start better early.”

The Jack’s 1st chance to grab an early lead will be at home Friday, August 30th against Tygarts Valley.
