NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. — The Habilitation Specialists at Northwood Health Systems’ Wetzel County facility have announced their decision to unionize, seeking better working conditions, improved client care, and a stronger voice in decision-making processes.

Citing a desire for greater input in matters affecting their livelihoods, the workers have joined forces to address pressing issues such as wages, hours, and benefits.

“We are united in our commitment to providing exceptional care to our clients, and we believe that unionizing will enable us to better serve them,” said Dylan Parsons, a Habilitation Specialist and union organizer. “By working together, we can create a more supportive and sustainable work environment that benefits everyone.”

The unionization effort coincides with the recent announcement of rate increases for the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) waiver program, which aligns with the recommendations of a state-commissioned study.

The study proposed wage increases ranging from $15.50 to $18.60 per hour for IDD field workers, highlighting the significant disparity with the current hourly wage of $10 for habilitation specialists at Northwood Health Systems.

Parsons praised Northwood CEO Mark Games for his willingness to engage in open communication with workers, citing a recent example where Games agreed to meet with staff in person to address their concerns. In April, workers at the Wetzel facility had announced plans for a 24-hour strike on May 1st, citing low wages as a major issue. However, the strike was called off after Games committed to meeting with the staff, demonstrating his willingness to listen and work towards finding solutions.

“We appreciate the open communication and willingness to listen from Northwood Health Systems’ leadership,” added Parsons. “We look forward to continuing this collaboration and working together to maintain a positive and productive work environment.”

The Habilitation Specialists say they are eager to negotiate their first collective bargaining agreement and are confident that their unionization will have a positive impact on the facility and the community it serves.
