STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (WTRF) — Between First Fridays and brand-new higher education options, Steubenville’s Historic 4th Street is also pointing the way to the city’s future.

On Friday, the College of St. Joseph the Worker announced that the former post office will soon become its main academic center.

The trade-focused Catholic school will renovate the historic building on 4th and Washington for classrooms and a library.

It’s the third building St. Joseph has bought downtown, including the old Diocese chancery and the former Tri-State Printing office.

President Mike Sullivan says the college has both education and renovation in mind.

“It was kind of a no-brainer to do it in Steubenville, where we need so much work and there are so many buildings that are just absolutely ripe for restoration. And we’re looking forward to having students that are going to be well-trained, competent craftsmen who can get in there and really do the great work that needs to be done to restore these buildings.”

The 100-year-old former post office should be ready in time for the Class of 2025.

Thirty students are set to inaugurate the college’s first-ever day of classes in just a few weeks on September 25.
