CADIZ, Ohio (WTRF) — Twelve hours and 22 miles at Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz were walked Saturday to remember and prevent a daily tragedy.

The 22 for 22 was held for the number of veterans and first responders who lose their lives to suicide every 24 hours.

Between 6 am and 6 pm, the public was invited to walk, bike or ride around the pond to help show others that they aren’t alone in their struggles.

Harrison County says more than 50 of its residents have taken their own lives since 2007.

“Suicide doesn’t discriminate. You know, it’s our moms, it’s our sons, it’s our neighbors, it’s our elderly aging population.”

Katie Norris, Deputy Health Commissioner, Harrison County Health Department

“With all my other nieces, nephews and grandkids, the statistics tell me there’s two or three of them going to have some struggles along the way. So we need to come out here, raise awareness about it.”

    Dirk Harkins, Head organizer

At noon, walkers took flags around the pond.

Donations were also taken for a scholarship in memory of Larry Bossell and Zane Carson.
