Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF-TV) A ribbon cutting ceremony was held this afternoon to celebrate the official opening of the new splash pad on the Waterfront.

The splash pad is out front of WesBanco Arena, and even though it is a decorative fountain, you can walk through the water when it is turned on.

There will be lights on the splash pad at night that can change colors, and there is a button that turns on the fountain.

City officials say it was completed about two weeks ago and has become a popular stop along the waterfront.

“This is a symbol of renaissance. I mentioned a little bit ago that Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Owensboro, Kentucky, and there are other cities that are in the middle of a major renaissance on major rivers, and they all have splash pad and light shows. So, we’re really right there with them. I do believe that this is another symbol of the great progress we’re making right now.”

    Mayor Denny Magruder – Wheeling

Mayor Magruder also says he is grateful that the contractor was able to work around some challenges while building the pad.

The Waterfront and WesBanco Arena are two busy places with lots of activity, so squeezing in construction was difficult.

Also, there were underground electric utility lines that had to be relocated, which slowed the progress. The splash pad is open to everyone, including dogs.
