Marshall County Librarian named 2025 Personnel of the Year

Local librarian Nicole McCulley has been named the 2025 West Virginia School Service Personnel of the Year.

Due to her exceptional work at Center McMichen Elementary and Glen Dale Elementary it’s evident why the West Virginia Board of Education chose her to be honored.

McCulley said she was shocked when she heard the news and was honored by staff and county members alike.

“I was completely blown away, and then when I went down this week and Governor Justice said that I had won I didn’t move. I waited to make sure he actually did say my name and it was such a huge honor to receive the award and chosen from an amazing group of people.”

Fellow staff member and friend Sarah Ward says that the whole school was rooting for her and had no doubt that she’d be selected.

“She’s kind, she’s genuine, she’s helpful – I mean she’d help anybody with anything. I think having her here with us and being that kind of person also allows the children to see what being a good person is all about and how to be a good human.”

McCulley says it’s her mission to bring excitement to the classroom and make sure her students stay engaged.

“I want people to go to school and feel safe, be excited, be able to boost literacy throughout the state. I want the kid in the back of the classroom to feel confident when he leaves school at the end of the day.”

Her students say she’s an awesome teacher and she always helps them with what they need.

“We get to help out with so many different things, and I love that she always helps us find the best books possible.”
