(WTRF) — High school students throughout the Ohio Valley, get ready to engage with STEM in a whole new way.

The OVAC is announcing their groundbreaking new partnership with the Ohio Natural Energy Institute by kicking off the 2024-25 STEM Trivia Challenge.

Executive Director Bruce Tague says this competition is a great way to get students involved in STEM.

“Students have a chance to answer as many STEM questions as they can within a certain time limit, then the challenge will run until April 17th, 2025. We’re just so excited and we’re glad the OVAC allowed us to partner with them on this app.”

Bruce Tague, executive director of the Ohio Natural Energy Institute

Tague says the challenge not only covers topics like science and mathematics but also teaches students about the oil and gas industry.

“How the oil and natural gas was created here millions and millions of years ago, how we extract it out of the ground – and a lot of folks don’t realize that our everyday lives are made easier because of the oil and gas industry. Everything from your headphones to stretchy clothes to cell phones, it’s all petroleum based.”

The top-performing student at the end of the school year will receive a $1,500 college scholarship and the school with the highest percentage of participating students will receive a $1,500 grant to support future STEM initiatives.

Tague reminds juniors and seniors that in addition to the challenge, the Ohio Natural Energy Foundation awards annual scholarships to students entering the oil and gas industry.
