WHEELING, W.Va (WTRF) — Community members throughout the Ohio Valley came together for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Several stories were shared by families as well as those who’ve experienced Alzheimer’s and dementia first-hand.

This fundraiser provides education about this disease and creates a support network for those involved.

“Congratulations to everybody at the upper Ohio Valley Walk to End Alzheierms, we are so proud to have you as part of our community for all the work that you’ve done and look forward to working with you on updating the states care plan.”

Community figures like delegate Dianna Winzenreid and others have joined in the walk to end Alzheimer’s.

This event is the Alzheimer’s Association’s largest fundraiser, as global leaders in research the organization aims to find new treatments and offer support to those who are affected.

“We offer a 24/7 crisis hotline, community education for folks, support groups. We live in a world, an era of treatment. We’ve got FDA approved medication and treatment on the market to help slow the disease progression with those in their early stages and that’s hopefully buying us more time to find our first survivor.”

Executive director Diane Miller says she’s participated in this walk for over 10 years in honor of her grandparents.

She says community support is vital because it’s not just the patients that suffer, it’s the families as well.

“There are so many people that suffer from Alzheimer’s, it’s not just the patients themselves but families, friends, our community. It’s very nice to have so much support in our little community. Be patient, be kind, and don’t lose track of who you’re taking care of.”

Although this event has helped the Alzheimer’s Association and others make strides in the fight against this disease, they still have a ways to go before finding a cure.

Currently, the organization is $25,000 away from meeting its goal of $75,000. For those who are interested in contributing, donations will be accepted through December 31 st .
