MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. ( WTRF ) – The City of Cameron is kicking off a new tradition as a part of their Homecoming celebrations this year called “Blue and Gold Weekend.”

This two-day event is designed to bring parents, students and alumni together for a weekend of fun.

On Friday, Oct. 11 there will be a parade starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by a tailgate at 6 p.m. that runs until the Homecoming Football Game kicks off, which is at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Oct. 12 the downtown area will host a craft show with 50 plus vendors along with food trucks, games for kids, live music and much more.

“This is a new tradition for our community. We wanted to kind of put our brains together and try to link the older generation and the younger generation into community spirit and get the school involved in the community.”

Nichole Bryan | Cameron City Clerk

“The idea of getting people to come home has been very exciting. Cameron is a different town. Once you get here, it doesn’t really matter where you’re coming from. Once you get here and you’re taken in by Cameron, then you’re a dragon.”

Hattie Debolt | Teacher, Cameron High School

Bryan and Debolt graduated together from Cameron High School and say it’s been nice seeing the community work together to make the event possible.

Jim Rogers served as the head football coach for the Cameron Dragons for nearly 32 years and is now a proud member of Friends of Cameron Football.

Rogers says they use to have a Cameron Pork Roast “back in the day”, that attracted over 300 people to the Moundsville area to support the football team.

He says Friends of Cameron Football are doing something similar to that event as a part of the new homecoming tradition called “Cameron Football Alumni Reunion.”

“There’s going to be a catered meal including chicken and mac and cheese and salad and a roll and all that. We’re going to have music. We’re going to have a Chinese auction. We’re going to do the whole thing over again and see how it goes. Everyone seems excited for this reunion.”

While the high school students are at their homecoming dance Saturday Night, Friends of Cameron Football will be hosting an alumni reunion.

The reunion is being held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Cameron Legion Annex Building.

Tickets for the alumni reunion are $20 and all the proceeds are donated back to the Cameron Football Boosters.

“We’re a small community, but there’s a lot of pride here. A lot of pride. All this money [from the reunion dinner] goes to the football boosters because of the expense. Football is the most expensive sport, and we have great boosters here. They take care of our kids, middle school and high school.”

Tickets can be purchased at the Cameron City Building (ask for Nichole).
