WHEELING, W.Va. ( WTRF ) – Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous drug that has been becoming extremely sought after in the last few years.

YWCA Program Director Shannalee Kuri says they have seen the “drug of choice” go from heroin to fentanyl in recent years. Fentanyl is estimated to be 50 times more potent than heroin.

There are multiple resources for people suffering from substance abuse right here in the Ohio Valley.

The YWCA has several programs including the Women in New Directions, known as WIND, 7News reported on earlier this week with the story of Clarissa Adkins .

Kuri explains that this three-phase program is a non-treatment recovery home for women seeking recovery.

“So basically, like I said, three phases. Initially, when women come in, they are typically coming from DOC or the regional jail system or treatment centers. Oftentimes when individuals call us and they’re still actively using, what we’ll have them do is go to a detox and then go to treatment. That way they have somewhat of a foundation before they get to us.”

Adkins is a two-time graduate of the program and talked about how it helped her back on her feet.

“Mainly, I wanted to come back to the WIND program because I knew that everything would be okay. I knew all the things that they offer. You can come with nothing, no personal documents, no clothes. And being here, they give you a great introduction to recovery. They introduce you to 12 step meetings. They have all kinds of ways for girls to get close.”
