Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF) – Scammers are fleecing Americans for huge amounts of cash these days.

The Better Business Bureau says that last year alone more than 930 million dollars were lost, with almost 120 million more attempted…and that’s only what was reported to them.

So this Saturday the BBB is holding a community shred and e-cycle event.

You can bring in any paper documents with personal information to have shredded, and give them most small electronic devices which they will recycle. That would include tablets, laptops, old phones and more which have sensitive information on them.

To protect your identity, it’s critical not to just toss these items in the trash where anyone can get to them.

“And it may not be even someone that you would classify as a ‘scammer.’ It could be someone that’s going through a garbage dump, or going through garbage. I’ve had before where people would rip open garbage because they collect metal or things of that sort. Well if you have your personal information in your trash, anybody can get that.”

Laura Blankenship, Regional Marketing Specialist for W.V. BBB

The paper shredding is free but some electronics require a $10 fee.

It will be at St. Michael Angelus Center at 1225 National Road in Wheeling from 9am until 1pm.

There will also be a farmer’s market going on at the same time.
