Wheeling Island, W.Va. (WTRF) There are many things at Madison elementary school worth recognizing, and the latest is their General Summative Assessment, or GSA data.

Their scores rank among some of the highest in the entire state.

Madison Elementary school on Wheeling Island has become a model of what a successful school looks like.

Principal Andrea Trio instills a positive culture in all the students as well as her teachers and staff.

“The question I ask myself each and every day when I come to school, when I leave school is did, we do what was best for students? And if that is the number one focus, then the rest certainly just drives itself and falls all into place.”

    Andrea Trio – Principal

But it’s not just the learning culture that makes this school so great.

Academic curriculum is central to any school’s success, and here at Madison, the curriculum is designed to push students to success.

“We have some great curriculums happening that the county has provided with wit and wisdom from the English language arts reading aspect of it. It really goes along with the science of reading and its very knowledge based. So, our kids are learning how to. They may not be physically reading it on their own pieces of it, but they’re such conversations that they’re learning how to go back into things they’ve read and find information.”

    Cathy Whorton – Reading Interventionist

Trio has been Principal of Madison elementary since 2016 and has made it her mission to ensure that her students and teachers are succeeding.

The school has exceeded the standard for math, with an 80.56 percent proficiency rate and meets the standard for ELA with a 78.89 percent proficiency rate.

Ohio county schools ranked 2nd in the state overall out of 55 counties.
