MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (WTRF) — Hundreds of areas in the south are still dealing with substantial devastation from Hurricane Helene and it’s important to know that the Ohio Valley is also susceptible to similar weather patterns.

Marshall County Emergency Management Director, Tom Hart, says the Ohio Valley has a very similar terrain in comparison to southern regions like Western North Carolina.

He says while our region might not see direct impacts from hurricanes there have been instances in the past where the aftermath of tropical storms has brought devastating impacts.

Hart says it is crucial to look closely at your insurance policies and ensure you have proper coverage for your home.

”Best practice, is actually look at those insurance policies, see what’s covered, what’s not. If you have questions ask. You know, check in to see what other type of policies you might need. Because even with federal assistance, it’s not going to make you whole and even with flood insurance, it’s not going to make you whole. So you need to look at it in regards to what is best for you and just, you know, look at the hazards around.”

Hart says it is also important that you sign up for your county’s mass notification system if they have one and to always stay weather aware.
