WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – Several Wheeling non-profits have officially received funding to help them continue to serve the people in the community.

Wheeling is what’s known as an “entitlement community” that receives a little over $1 million a year – 15% of those funds get allocated to non-profits in the form of Community Development Block Grants or CDBG.

Each year, these entities can apply for around $5,000 in assistance that supports their mission as a non-profit.

”Even though you can say, well, what could $5,000 do? But what that does is it shows our city’s support.  So, when they apply for other funding sources or they go to other sources for funding, it shows that they have the city behind them and that scores them some points on other grant applications.”

Nancy Prager – Community Development Director, City of Wheeling

The non-profits included in this round of CDBG funds include Catholic Charities, Family Services, House of the Carpenter, King’s Daughters, NAMI, Seeing Hand, the Soup Kitchen, Wheeling Health Right, YMCA, and the Laughlin Community Center.

Applications for Community Development Block Grants usually go out sometime in February or March.

l think helping our charities is wonderful, but the community development program, was I entered for the people of our community who are seniors, low income, and in great need of repairing their homes. The city decided to take these funds from disadvantage people and use the funds for their own city projects. I know the hardships of being hungry, and God bless all of them all the charities and community angels who deserve help and funding in their tireless work. but, there are so many people in our community that need help in safe and warm homes.
