WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – West Virginia Gubernatorial candidate Steve Williams was in Wheeling this evening campaigning to a specific group of workers that he says are “the foundation of our state.”

He held a town hall in collaboration with the West Virginia Education Association and American Federation of Teachers at Independence Hall.

Williams acknowledged that in today’s society, teachers are on the front lines as defenders and need assistance like behavioral health specialists in schools.

The message he wanted the educators and other voters in attendance to walk away with is to take pride in being from the Mountain State.

”The main goal is to remind people you’re a West Virginian. Stand tall, square your shoulders, hold your head high. We are West Virginians. Nobody is better than us and frankly, we can compete with anybody in the world. We have the capacity to be able to create innovative solutions that will change the world. And we have talent hiding in plain sight in every community. And just what we have to do is decide what we are going to do. You need to have a governor that is encouraging. I’m not going to come up with the answers. They will.”

Steve Williams – Democratic WV Gubernatorial Candidate / Huntington Mayor

Williams is a West Virginia native, where both of his parents were teachers, he attended Mercer County Schols and graduated from Marshall University. He also currently serves as the mayor of Huntington.

Many other democratic candidates were in attendance as well to show their support and also pitch their ideals to voters.

Williams will face off against republican candidate Patrick Morrisey for the governor’s seat this November.
