BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — National School Bus Safety Week starts Monday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells 7 News that troopers will be assigned to each school district in Belmont and Monroe counties.

They will follow the buses on their morning and afternoon runs and watch school zones.

They say their Motor Carrier Enforcement officers will participate also.

In the past five years in Ohio, there have been more than 6,000 school bus crashes, resulting in eight deaths and more than 2,000 injuries.

Troopers will look for drivers who pass a stopped school bus and those who violate school zone safety laws.

What a complete waste of time. I've driven a bus for over almost 20 years, no one ever runs my reds if a cop is there. We've got cameras, and it's still near impossible to bust these people who could care less there's a bus stopped.
