A 54-year-old caretaker at a zoo in India died Sunday after being brutally mauled by an angry hippo at the animal park, according to reports.

Santosh Kumar Mahto was attacked by the animal at Ranchi’s Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park after he went into the hippopotamus compound to remove a newborn calf for feeding, The Indian Express reported.

The protective mother hippo attacked Mahto, critically injuring him.

“Unfortunately, the caretaker succumbed to his injuries on Sunday at a private hospital here,” zoo director Jabbar Singh told the outlet. “The zoo authority took care of the hospital cost.

On Instagram, MalaMala pointed out that the bluff-charging rhino is brave despite missing a weapon with which it was born.
“No horn, no problem,” reads the description. (Rhino horns, which are sought by poachers, are sometimes removed in the wild to keep the animals safe.)
The footage was captured by David den Hartog, a ranger who might be among those heard chuckling while witnessing the amusing scene.

A routine flight training session at the Minnesota Zoo turned tragic when a Eurasian eagle owl escaped its handler and landed in a tiger enclosure, where it was killed by one of the tigers, according to a U.S. Agriculture Department inspection report and zoo officials. The incident occurred on April 29 during a bird show training session at the zoo in Apple Valley, a suburb of the Twin Cities. The owl, which was in the early stages of its training, failed to return to its handler and instead flew into an outdoor enclosure housing tigers. The tiger in the enclosure preyed upon the owl before zoo staff could intervene, the inspection report stated.
