2 people stabbed at West Broad Street Pulse stop in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. -- Two people were treated for stab wounds after a fight along West Broad Street in Richmond, VCU Police confirmed to a crime alert to the community.

"Police responded to reports of a fight in progress at the GRTC Pulse Bus Station. A witness reported that a victim had been stabbed during the altercation but left the area. The two victims were located with stab wounds and provided medical assistance for their injuries. The victims have no affiliation with VCU," the Thursday afternoon alert read.

Police responded to the the Pulse Bus stop, in the 1000 block of West Broad Street, at about 3:19 p.m.

VCU Police alerted the campus community and urged people to avoid the area while police investigated. The area has reopened around the VCU/VUU Pulse stop and buses are running.

"GRTC is aware of two recent incidents on Pulse platforms and is taking active steps to continue to improve the safety and transparency of GRTC bus service," a GRTC spokesperson wrote in a statement. "While these isolated incidents do not reflect the everyday reality of transit safety, they are unacceptable. Safety is GRTC’s number one priority, which is why we are reorganizing and refocusing our Safety and Security Department. This amended department will include dedicated staff and contractors to develop, oversee, and provide security on GRTC buses and at stations and platforms. We look forward to working with our partners and new team members to continue to improve GRTC service for all passengers."

The VCU Alert indicated police were looking for a suspect in the Thursday afternoon stabbings.

Thursday's reported stabbings come hours after a man was stabbed at a GRTC Pulse bus stop near the Quirk Hotel in Richmond Wednesday night, Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett.

Officers were called to the 300 block of N. Madison Street for a reported stabbing just after 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to Capt. Frank Scarpa with Richmond Police. When police arrived, they found a man who had been stabbed in the chest. Police confirmed the victim was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said the Wednesday night stabbing and the Thursday afternoon stabbing were not connected.
