TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — After Monday night’s caucus elected Derek Fell as the new Vigo County Sheriff, all of the county’s School Protection Officers have to be sworn in again.

This morning 38 of the county’s School Protection Officers were sworn in to protect the students of the area. These officers have gone through training to be able to keep schools as safe as possible.

Sheriff Derek Fell says school safety is always at the top of his priority list.

VCSC high school students will now be able to attend home sporting events for free

“I still have a child in our school system, so school safety is obviously something that I think about each and every day and hold very close to my heart,” he said. “We want to take it seriously and make sure our School Protection Officers are properly trained as well as doing everything that we can to give them the proper training and resources that they have to do their jobs effectively.”

Fell added that this also gives the students the chance to see and interact with an officer every day to get to see the positive sides of law enforcement.
