WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — School is back in session across the Vigo County School Corporation.

Students and staff at West Vigo High School welcomed another school year with lights, dancing, and introductions for each staff member. Principal Ryan Easton says it helps new and returning students know their teachers.

“I wanted students to be able to know faces with names,” Easton said. “They may not have that teacher until their junior year, but the more they can get to know that person, see that person, ‘oh I know who that is’, just helps things out. We wanted to liven that up a little bit, have some fun. I usually have a game or two, so we took that away and made that the game, hype it up a little bit, so the teachers were a little nervous, but they got into it and had a lot of fun.”

Every single student was in the gym for a ceremony. Senior Jayce Noblitt said it have him a chance to look back on how he got there, while welcoming a new class of freshmen at the same time.

“Definitely coming together, we’re all united as one at West Vigo.” Noblitt said. “It’s just amazing, it’s good to see. I know they’re nervous on their first day, but it’s not bad. It’s really fun once you get used to it.”

West Vigo has an annual tradition for the end of the ceremony. Easton says that everyone gathers at center court to huddle up and break it down as they get ready for the big game, the 2024 school year.

“There’s always a reason why you do that in a sport, to have that unity and we’re in this together as we roll into this event, game, whatever it is,” Easton said. “There’s no bigger game of life than the school year, so just to bring them in, they have fun with it, to show that unity as we head into the school year.”

While the first day was a celebration and a fun start, school leaders say that tomorrow will look a lot more like a normal school day.
