VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Nerves, excitement, and tears are a few things that made up the first day of school for the elementary students at Fuqua Elementary School on Wednesday.

Not only for the students but faculty at Fuqua Elementary says it’s just as exciting for them on the first day back to school.

“You are truly excited to see them,” says Mary Beth Harris, Fuqua Elementary School principal.

“You haven’t seen them in a while, so its noticing they’ve grown up some or just when their face lights up when they see you and they got so much to share about their summer. That’s part of that excitement about the first day too.”

And for the elementary school students, today was all about learning expectations for the new school year and their new classroom.

But one big thing Fuqua Elementary School prides themselves on is the sense of community.

“We know for learning to happen (students’) social and emotional needs need to be met first. That’s where we start,” said the principal of Fuqua Elementary.

“They have to feel safe and secure to feel a part of that school community before learning can take place. And we hope to see that pace for them.”

Fuqua Elementary School was one of 15 elementary schools in the Vigo County School Corporation that had their first day back on Wednesday.

WTWO hopes all schools have a great school year!
