VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Parents of students at Hoosier Prairie Elementary School received word this morning that a student brought a firearm to school.

In a letter to parents, Hoosier Prairie Elementary School Principal Jennifer Nickel assured parents that students and staff are safe and the school is secure.

She explained that when a student was emptying their backpack they found a firearm. The student immediately reported it to their teacher.

The teacher notified Nickel and she began working in collaboration with district administrators, VCSC Safety and Security, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, and the Department of Child Services.

“After an investigation and interview with the student, it was determined the firearm was not brought into the school as a threat. Regardless, this situation is extremely troubling and serious,” Nickel stated in her letter to parents.

The school corporation is continuing to work with law enforcement to further investigate this matter. Law enforcement and DCS are continuing their investigation.

Nickel reiterated, “Our school is safe and we are continuing with our day as usual.”
