Wednesday, the Vigo County Commissioners announced the completion of the first phase of the Riley Spur Trail, a 1.61-mile stretch from Louisville Road to Lama Road.

Although final shoulder work is still in progress, the Commissioners held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to allow trail enthusiasts to begin enjoying this newly completed section.

This is a milestone moment for our community. The Riley Spur Trail will be a great asset to Vigo County, and I’m personally excited to take advantage of this beautiful new trail. I look forward to seeing even more people out here enjoying it. We are also incredibly grateful to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for funding phase two through the Next Level Trails grant. This support allows us to continue our work on expanding the trail system for everyone to enjoy.

The first phase of the Riley Spur Trail was made possible through a $652,247 grant from Vigo County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. Phase two is currently in the design phase and is expected to break ground next spring. Phase two will be funded by a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Next Level Trails program, which the county has already been awarded.

When completed, the trail will span seven miles, connecting multiple places in and around Terre Haute.

We are working with the city. We got a nearly $2 million grant, Next Level Trails. We will dig into that now. We are going to go from Seventh and Margaret, all the way down to Canal Road, down to Springhill junction, and link up behind the Idle Creek Golf Couse, hopefully with this.

These investments in the community mark the begging of a multi-phase project designed to enhance outdoor recreational opportunities in Vigo county.
