TERRE HAUTE, Incs. (WTWO) — Local First Responders gave community members the opportunity to meet with their chiefs and leaders.

Custard with the Chiefs is an event that gives the community the chance to give feedback, ask questions, and enjoy their time with local law enforcement. Those who attended go to meet and chat with Terre Haute Police Chief Kevin Barrett and Terre Haute Fire Chief Darrick Scott while enjoying a free frozen custard treat.

Officials said it’s a great way to improve relationships with the community.

“We’re making it to where we’re accessible and that’s the big thing. We will take feedback. We know were not perfect and we want to improve. We want to help the community. Everybody here is from this community so we’re invested as well,” Sergeant Justin Sears said.

“I think it makes it easier for them to come up and talk to us even if they see us out at another restaurant or even on the street or something. They are more active to just come up and say hello to us,” Deputy Chief with EMS THFD Diana Ruther said.

The Terre Haute Police Department will also be hosting a First Responder Rally at Fairbanks Park on September 25th.
