First ever Canicross USA National Championship coming to Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A special canine event is coming to Terre Haute for the first time in December.

The first ever Canicross USA National Championship will be held at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course. Canicross is a sport where you run while connected by a harness with your dog. Canicross USA president Brian Thomas says that they are also looking for local dog shelters to receive half of the entry fee for the citizens races, which anyone can do with or without a dog.

“People will do our trail running event and they will see people running with dogs,” Thomas said. “Then they will go out and many of the people will go out and get a rescue so they have a dog to run with, and they’ll run with the dog most days of the week and then they’ll come to our events and run with the dogs then, so it’s been a very cool outcome.”
