TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — NBC has partnered with hundreds of animal shelters around the country for Clear the Shelters event.

Clear the Shelters is a nationwide pet adoption campaign that helps animals find a loving family.

The event incentivizes local community members to come to the shelters and potentially adopt a new pet, for a smaller price. Yet, it also helps the shelter, as overcrowding has become a problem.

If you felt like maybe, you weren’t able to pay the adoption, our normal adoption fees, this gives you a little price break. We are hoping that we get enough adopted that we can get our overcrowding situation a little under control.

With the large number of animals at the shelter, volunteers are needed. One volunteer didn’t plan on joining the shelter but has now been there for 12 years.

I was actually looking for my missing dog, and I came here so often, another volunteer here said, “Hey, why don’t you just start volunteering here.” I’ve been doing it for about 12 years now. You get to interact with all these animals, and they just want to be loved and to help them out and help them find the homes that they need.

As an NBC affiliate, WTWO joined in the efforts. Members were at Terre Haute Humane Society, helping animals find a new home.

One lady made the trip all the way from Wisconsin to adopt here in Terre Haute. Wheeler says stories like this are the reward of working.

We had a dog this morning that has been here for almost a year and he went home today. Seeing the ones that have been here for a while or been here because of hard situations, family has passed away and they have lost their home, seeing them get out is great. It’s a great reward.

Clear the Shelters will continue for an entire month as adoption specials will be available through September 10th.
