TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Labor Day exists because of the work of labor unions.

Unions created and fought for the five-day work week and paid national holidays like this one.

The Wabash Valley is home to dozens of labor unions, in multiple fields.

Paul Fitch of Teamsters says it remains vital for young people to understand what unions do and who they represent.

It’s a good job, it’s a good future, and I would like to see more younger people get into it. That’s probably why I’m here. I’m probably one of the older ones, I’m 72, but I have come back into this field for the benefits and for the brotherhood. To see if I can bring some younger people in.

    Paul Fitch – Teamsters

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2023, the number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions was 14.4 million.
