MARTINSVILLE, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)— Residents of Martinsville, IL have a new mayor as of Wednesday night. And the city is currently looking for a new city attorney and city clerk/city collector.

Robert Lovell, a city councilman for two years, was named Acting Mayor by the city council after Mayor Herman Davidson submitted his resignation effective immediately.

According to Deputy City Collector Melinda Lovell, Mayor Herman Davidson, City Attorney Richard Bernardoni, and City Clerk/City Collector Sheena Hammond submitted their resignations at a special meeting of the city council on Wednesday evening.

The resignations contained their names, their positions, date and that the resignations were effective immediately. All letters were notarized.

In speaking with WTWO, Acting Mayor Lovell stated that he is just trying to navigate through the process which includes looking for a new city attorney.

“I just don’t want anything to slip through the cracks that would affect the residents of Martinsville,” said Lovell.

Lovell has spoken with Davidson to “get as much information as possible” about items that need immediate attention.

This is a developing story and WTWO will update as information becomes available.
