CAYUGA, Ind. (WTWO) — 8th graders in Vermillion County got the chance to explore and learn more about the nature that is right in their backyard.

During Duke Energy’s 25th annual Wetlands Days, students get to go out of the normal classroom and get outside. Vermillion County’s Purdue Extension Youth Educator Morgan Lutz said days like this open up all sorts of possibilities.

“They get all of this hands-on experience which is really important to them,” said Lutz. “We have professionals here teaching them so they could learn about careers if they are interested in science and could potentially take them to their future.”

North Vermillion student Colton Medina was finding the fun in the educational experience.

“I am able to learn more about the wetlands and technically my house because my house is around wetlands, so this is like my backyard a little bit,” said Medina. “This place is pretty beautiful, and it needs to be well preserved.”

Lutz said she hopes this moment will stay with the students for a lifetime.

“Seeing all of the kids come together and having a good time learning so that they can hopefully take a piece of information back to school with them and share it with their friends,” said Lutz.

It wasn’t just an environmental experience as other educators also grounded the students with lessons in electrical science.
