TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Hoosier Prairie Elementary School is taking the classroom outside with there newest out door classroom.

Last school year, they received a grant to create an outdoor classroom and reading area. The school held an unveiling with the community of the outdoor classroom Thursday evening. The outdoor classroom consists of sensory friendly activities like a weaving station, chalk art, and music boards. There is also a garden where students can plant flowers.

Students say they enjoy having another area to learn.

“I think that the outside garden for Hoosier Prairie is gonna be a great experience for everyone who comes out here,” fifth grader Payton Shahadey said.

“The outside is more calming to me and I like to hear the birds chirp. And it just sounds really peaceful,” fifth grader Charlee Steiner said.

“So much learning goes on inside the classroom, but it’s just a much bigger and broader scope for kids to come outside,” Kindergarten Teacher Brenda Keiser said.

This classroom was funded by a mini grant from the United Way of the Wabash Valley and the Hoosier Prairie Elementary PTO.
