INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — The 181st intelligence wing of the Indiana National Guard will deploy to North Carolina to help with search and rescue efforts following the destruction left by Hurricane Helene. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb made the announcement earlier this evening.

Holcomb said, “Hoosiers stand with those affected and our thoughts are with the brave men and women aiding in the relief efforts.”

Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun stated the following: “The Hoosier state and the city of Terre Haute are committed to standing with those affected. Thank you, Governor Holcomb for your trust in the 181st. They’ll be a tremendous asset in North Carolina.”

Since Friday, a swift water rescue team from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, South Bend Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department and Mishawaka Fire Department have been operating in North Carolina.

The Indiana National Guard is expected to be based in Hickory, North Carolina for about two weeks.
