PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV)— Anika Currie, an employee with Horizon Health, saved an 88-year-old woman whose vehicle went into the water at Twin Lakes Park.

“I don’t feel like a hero,” said Anika, a Horizon Health employee. “I’m just glad she’s okay.”

On October 5, Currie was at Twin Lakes Park with her children and two friends when they witnessed the woman drive over parking blocks and into the water according to a news release from Horizon Health. Currie and her two friends jumped into the water as the car began to sink. Currie, a former lifeguard, pulled the woman from her vehicle through the window after it was underwater. The driver held her breath for up to a minute before Currie was able to reach her. Horizon Health EMS was notified and arrived at the scene shortly after. Horizon Health’s EMS Manager Adam Webb states that the woman likely wouldn’t have survived without Currie and her friends intervening.

“It was a total team effort,” Anika explained. “I was just the one who had the adrenaline and the right angle to get her out of the car.”

In recognition of her act Horizon Health presented Currie with its High-5 PRIDE Award on October 9. According to the release the award honors clinical and support staff for their extraordinary service to their team, patients, family, and community.
