Race for Vigo County Commissioner in District 3

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The ballot for Vigo County Commissioner in District 3 features Republican incumbent Mike Morris and Democratic candidate Tony Kassissieh.

Mike Morris served on the Vigo County Council for 10 years before taking over as county commissioner in 2020.

He emphasized the businesses that have been brought to the community during his term.

Bringing new businesses to the county with Amazon Distribution Center, Entec, expansion at Steel Dynamics, opening a new casino. A pretty broad range of things.

Democratic nominee Tony Kassissieh worked in the television field in Vigo County for 30 years.

He says that this experience will help him listen to the community.

My experiences with people and dealing with people are kind of where I differ from my opponent. I believe you can’t learn unless you listen.

Morris says, going forward, he is looking to continue adding to the county with housing and road improvements.

We have some appropriations, some money, to make some more road improvements and build out our county. We’ve got some infrastructure things. We’ve initiated a housing development program through Thrive.

Kassissieh says one of his main focuses will be the jail, as it is too small, and the county is paying the price for overcrowding.

Two years we’ve been still sending our inmates to other counties, costing us a lot of money in the process. $37,000 a month we’re spending now and housing our inmates in other communities. We have got to get that under control.
