VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — On the ballot for the District One for Vigo County School Board, you’ll find incumbent Amy Lore, candidates Peggy Joyner, Christina Crist, and Rosemarie Scott.

Lore said if re-elected she wants to continue to support the visions of Superintendent Dr. Chris Himsel, and address the facility needs within the Vigo County School Corporation.

“It’s been an honor to work with him, and I want to continue to do that,” said District One candidate Amy Lore. “I want to support the vision he has for better student outcomes, for better teacher pay, and for better facilities. We are all well aware that our high schools are in dire need of ongoing support.”

Accessibility is key for first-time candidate Peggy Joyner, as she says if elected she wants to make school board meeting more accessible to the general public.

“You’re not only accountable to the superintendent and the administration, you’re also accountable to the community that it serves,” said Peggy Joyner. “Accessibility is key. With the administration building being so far away, out of town, I think it would be a good idea to host some board meetings in town so that they’re more accessible to the community.”

First time candidate Christina Crist says if elected she will be focused on the well-being of the students and staff by being a mental health advocate on the board.

“Most people are like what does that even mean.. mental health,” said Christina Crist. “That means food, that means your environment, that means your physical health, your academic health. When I say mental health, it’s the overall wealth and health of an individual.”

After previously serving on the board in the past, Rosemarie Scott says she would advocate for classroom sizes, and help with bullying in the school system.

“We still have a problem with bullying,” said the former school board member, Rosemarie Scott. “We hear that word (bullying) over and over, it’s really tough. It’s hard on the kids. It affects attendance, and it affects the morale of the whole building. I think we need to make it a major issue and address it. We need to see if we can figure our really concrete ways to stop it.”

With two District One seats open this election, residents of Vigo County will be given the chance to cast their vote regardless of the district they live in.
