NEW DETAILS: Valdosta Police explain why airport operations halted Thursday

UPDATE SEPT 20:

Valdosta Police Department released the following information regarding the incident that halted operations at the airport Thursday morning.

On September 19, 2024, at approximately 6:20 am., the Valdosta Police Officer assigned to the Valdosta Regional Airport received information from a 33-year-old female, that she had ingested multiple explosive devices. Due to the nature of her comments, the officer isolated her in an open location away from the public, as well as the airport. The area around the airport was secured from all traffic, other than first responders.

Detectives and members of the department’s Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene. As they began to talk with the female, detectives believed the female appeared to be in severe emotional distress.

Because of the threat of explosive devices, for the protection of the public and the female, numerous resources were requested to respond and assist in the investigation. With the assistance of Georgia State Patrol, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia Bureau of Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, multiple areas were searched, and no explosive devices were located.

The scene was deemed clear and released before 11:00 am., which did not affect any flights into or out of the airport.

The female was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Detectives continue to follow up with information relative to this case for criminal prosecution.

“We appreciate the rapid response and assistance by all the agencies mentioned above, along with the Valdosta Fire Department and South Georgia Medical Center Emergency Medical Services. This is a great example of how organizations will work together to ensure that we keep our community safe.” Said Chief Leslie Manahan.

Valdosta Police said, "operations at the Valdosta Airport are back to normal. We thank everyone for their patience."

The community relations and marketing manager for the City of Valdosta said first responders are at the Valdosta Airport addressing an isolated incident.

In an e-mail sent to ABC 27, it said "at this time, there is no apparent threat to the community. Please avoid the area, and further updates will be provided."

The Valdosta Police Department posted about the incident at 10:03 a.m.
