BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre in Beckley will host performances of “The Miracle Worker,” a stage play that tells the story of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan, from May 3, 2024, to May 5.

Written by William Gibson, “The Miracle Worker” is a three act play that tells the story of Helen Keller, a woman who was blind and deaf, and how Anne Sullivan’s determination to teach Keller enabled her to live a successful life despite her disabilities. Keller, born in 1880, lost her vision and hearing at 19 months old, and Sullivan experienced a childhood of neglect.

The show is produced by Timothy Runion and Samantha Ingram; Ingram will also star as Keller. Linda Boyd, a veteran local actress, will be portraying Sullivan in the performances.

This beautiful adaptation tells how Helen met her teacher and life companion, Annie Sullivan.

Through the performances, the producers aim to highlight the enduring struggle of individuals with disabilities and to bring awareness and art to Southern West Virginia.

We want this show to be a staple in our community by dedicating this production to those with disabilities. Friday night’s production of this show will be interpreted by a certified sign language interpreter.

The producers discovered a local connection to Helen Keller while researching her life. In June 1939, Keller visited Beckley and spoke at the Lions Club’s annual state convention located at the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Memorial Building and Black Knight.

As far as we know, this show has not been presented in Southern West Virginia since 1968 when the Curtain Callers put on the show.
