Ever since its brief stint at the top of the Big 12 standings at the beginning of conference play, the WVU baseball team (33-22) has been tabbed as a likely NCAA Tournament participant.

That still appears to be the case — most projections had WVU as a No. 2 seed before the Big 12 Tournament — but an 0-2 showing in the conference postseason bracket makes things less clear-cut. Just two years ago, the Mountaineers were excluded from the NCAA Tournament while sporting a top-50 RPI ranking (No. 49) after the conference tournament.

Before Wednesday’s games, WVU was ranked No. 33 in the RPI. No. 38 TCU and No. 44 Kansas State — the two teams who beat the Mountaineers in Arlington — sported top-50 RPIs, too.

The Mountaineers earned the No. 2 seed in the Lexington Regional last season after they were deemed the No. 27 team in the country by the RPI. They went 1-2 with a run differential of negative-eight in regional play.

Should WVU’s name get called Monday afternoon, it would mark the program’s first set of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances since the Mountaineers earned bids in four consecutive tournaments from 1961-1964.
