    West Virginia native, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock dies at 53

    BECKLEY, WV ( WVNS ) — West Virginia native Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker best known for “Super Size Me” has died, according to multiple outlets.

    According to the Associated Press, Spurlock died Thursday in New York from complications of cancer, according to a statement issued Friday by his family. He was 53.

    Spurlock was born in 1970 in Parkersburg, West Virginia before being raised in Beckley where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He went on to graduate from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1993 with a degree in film.

    In 2004, Spurlock released his breakthrough documentary, “Super Size Me”, which shined a light on fast food and what it does to the body. The sequel, “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken, was released in 2019.

    In the statement issued by Spurlock’s family, “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan”.
