Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month:

    Temperatures in July

July 2024 was once again another historically warm month, as we ended up with the eighth warmest July on record, with us being 2.0 degrees above normal for the month at 73.7 degrees. For reference, our average July temperature (taking the high temperature and the low temperature and dividing it by two over each day in July) is 71.8 degrees. The record July average temperature is 75.8 degrees set in 1931. This warm month succeeds a historically warm June, which was tied for the ninth warmest July on record.

July began on a very hot and dry note. All but three days of the first half of the month were above average in temperature. Temperatures were closer to normal overall for the second half of the month. Only eight days in July featured below average temperatures!

    • Warmest High Temperature: 92 degrees (July 15th and 16th)
    • Coolest High Temperature: 72 degrees (July 1st)
    • Coolest Low Temperature: 55 degrees (July 1st)
    • Warmest Low Temperature: 71 degrees (July 4th)

    Rainfall in July

Rainfall in July was once again well below normal, just as the month of June was. For the month, Beckley received 3.59″, which is 1.41″ below our average of exactly 5.00″. We only received about 72 percent of what we typically see – this did not help the ongoing drought that is being experienced in our region, as many of us are currently experiencing a severe drought.

On the bright side, the second half of July was certainly wetter than the first half of July. We only saw 0.14″ of rain during the first half of July but saw 3.45″ of rain during the second half of the month, including 1.13″ on July 22nd and 0.69″ on July 24th.

    • Wettest Day : 1.13″ (July 22nd)

    Full Moon – Buck Moon

The full moon for July was the Buck Moon, which took place on the July 21st. Viewing was not great at the time of the full moon with scattered showers and storms around during that timeframe.

    Independence Day

The 4th of July was the hottest we had experienced since 2020, with a high temperature of 86 degrees – despite the hot day, we still had a few rain showers with 0.09″ of rain. It was a classic hot and humid day in the two Virginias.

Launched in 2022, #WeatherTogether is a dedicated community photo album hosted by 59News and StormTracker 59 to allow viewers to submit weather photos directly to us that we can share on all our platforms on-air or online. These photos are also showcased in our web-based photo album on our site for all to see and enjoy! Any photo of interesting weather, storm damage, snowfall, pets playing in puddles or snow and the likes are all welcomed! We hope to use this to showcase the beauty of the two Virginias through the eyes of our viewers and the vastly dynamic weather we see because we think there is no place more beautiful than here.

See for yourself the collection of photos already submitted or submit a few of your own, here .
