Few showers return Wednesday, steadier rains loom with Debby Friday

Tonight features partly cloudy skies with temperatures dropping back into the mid 60s. Patchy river fog is possible toward dawn.
Tuesday is another toasty summer day for the two Virginias, as the mercury will quickly climb into the mid to upper 80s. We’ll see the potential for a brief isolated shower over the mountains with a weak disturbance scooting through in the afternoon but otherwise, we’re quiet once again elsewhere. We’ll see temperatures dip back into the mid 60s with a touch more humidity.
Wednesday brings a cold front through the region. We’ll see partly cloudy skies in between scattered showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon. There will be plenty of breaks! is expected to slide across the region with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers. We’ll see high temperatures jump into the mid 80s. How far our cold front scoots to our east out ahead of the remnants of Hurricane Debby will be crucial for rain chances later in the week.
Thursday keeps the risk for an isolated shower or two as the remnants of Debby begin to approach very slowly from the south. Though we’ll be mostly dry for the day, plenty of humidity with summertime heat will produce scattered showers, especially the farther south you are. We’ll see high temperatures near 80. Showers return by dinnertime and will become steady overnight.
Friday brings a high chance for rain, especially the farther east you are, as Debby’s remnants are expected into the east. Keep in mind that Debby’s slow movement is a bit unpredictable – subtle changes in the remnants’ track will alter our rainfall totals – a slightly westward jog toward our region could provide some much needed rainfall, especially for the mountains, while a more eastward track would keep the storm’s steadier rains away from the region. At this point, an inch of rain looks to be a good possibility in our eastern counties over the mountain areas, with less totals west, but there will be changes and fine-tuning as we get closer to her arrival and we’ll keep you updated on that. High temperatures will be held into the 70s with abundant clouds. The best chance for rain will be in the afternoon and overnight Friday into early Saturday. Some of our mountain counties could see more than 2 inches of steady rain – great for drought issues but the threat is there for local high water.
Saturday begins a little soggy, especially the farther east you with a couple of isolated showers. Skies will clear during the afternoon from west to east as high pressure nudges in from the west with plenty of sunshine area-wide by dinner time. With a cooler airflow from the northwest behind Debby’s remnants, we’ll see highs only in the mid 70s.
Sunday looks great! We’ll see mostly sunny skies and it’s a cooler day than what we’ve experienced recently with morning temperatures in the upper 50s and highs only in the mid 70s. With low humidity, it’ll feel more like September outside!
Monday once again begins on a cool start with mid 50s in the lowlands – don’t be shocked to see a few 40s in the higher peaks! Plenty of sunshine with high pressure in control keeps the humidity low with a northerly breeze and highs only around 80 which is right on par for normal for this time of year.
Tuesday keeps plenty of sunshine around with highs around 80. An isolated shower can’t be ruled out in the mountains during the afternoon.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, isolated chances for scattered showers return Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No day at this point looks like a washout, which is great news for the State Fair of West Virginia with high temperatures generally in the low to mid 80s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – we’ll see you there!
