LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — Generation West Virginia, a fellowship program for young professionals to gain skills in the Mountain State, is highlighting one of their Class of 2024 members.

Lewisburg native, Mary Claire Ickes, reflected on hometown and things she has experienced in the Generation West Virginia Fellowship Class of 2024.

I have always said Lewisburg gave me roots and wings.

She recounted that she gained a strong foundation through outdoor exploration and performing at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre, and how it gave her what she needed to thrive as an individual.

Ickes noted that teachers and educators motivated students to learn outside of the traditional school setting. Places such as the Green Bank Telescope control room and the Greenbrier River were utilized in her learning. The values of creativity and working together as a team were instilled through her involvements in the arts.

As for her time in the current GWV Fellowship Class, Mary Claire finds sources of inspiration in the lives of her peers and their goal to spotlight the Mountain State. She stresses the importance of preserving traditions as well as weaving in modern viewpoints to assist in the longevity for future generations.

As the fellowship continues, I am eager to see what our members will accomplish to further West Virginia.
