    Alerts Issued for Our Region

    • FLOOD WATCH in effect from 8 PM Thursday to 8 PM Friday for Pocahontas County.
    • FLOOD WATCH in effect from 6 AM Thursday to 12 AM Saturday for Giles and Bland counties.

Rainfall totals in our eastern counties will likely exceed 2 inches widespread across the region, posing the threat for flooding. The heaviest rain will fall Thursday night into Friday morning. Remember to never cross flooded roadways – turn around, don’t drown!

Tonight features a few scattered showers and storms. They’ll be widely scattered but also will be slow-moving and capable of dropping very localized heavy rainfall. We’ll see temperatures only drop back into the upper 60s in what will be a very muggy night. Showers will be most prevalent before midnight.

Thursday keeps the risk for an isolated shower or two in the morning but the remnants of Debby will begin to approach very slowly from the south. Showers will become widespread across the region from south to north by dinnertime, with steady rain continuing into the overnight hours and Friday. Although rain is expected to be steady, occasional bands of heavy rain will pose a high water threat, primarily over the mountains where the heaviest and steadiest rains will setup. High temperatures will be held down to around 80 with mostly cloudy skies expected for most of the day.

Friday brings a high chance for rain, especially the farther east you are, as Debby’s remnants move through. This will be fantastic for providing drought relief, especially over the mountains, however the threat for some localized flooding issues will be present as well. An inch of rain looks to be a good possibility near and along the I-77 corridor, with 2 to 4 inches of rain expected in our eastern counties over the mountain areas.

Less rainfall is expected in our western counties, with less than a half inch of rain expected by the time you head west to Welch. High temperatures will be held into the 70s with abundant clouds and rain. Remember to never try to cross high water – turn around, don’t drown!

Saturday begins with a few clouds but we’ll see plenty of sunshine by mid-morning. Skies will clear during the afternoon from west to east as high pressure nudges in from the west with plenty of sunshine area-wide by dinner time. With a cooler airflow from the northwest behind Debby’s remnants, we’ll see highs only in the mid 70s.

Sunday looks great! We’ll see mostly sunny skies and it’s a cooler day than what we’ve experienced recently with morning temperatures in the upper 50s and highs only in the mid 70s. With low humidity, it’ll feel more like September outside!

Monday once again begins on a cool start with mid 50s in the lowlands – don’t be shocked to see a few 40s in the higher peaks! Plenty of sunshine with high pressure in control keeps the humidity low with a northerly breeze and highs only around 80 which is right on par for normal for this time of year.

Tuesday sees our chances for rain on the increase with a weak disturbance scooting through. The day won’t be a washout but we’ll have occasional showers and perhaps a rumble or two of thunder with highs in the low 80s.

Severe Weather Awareness Week: Flash Flooding

Wednesday provides the risk for just an isolated shower or two. Otherwise, we’ll be partly cloudy with highs in the low 80s.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, isolated chances for scattered showers return for Thursday before we dry out on Friday. Saturday keeps the risk for an isolated shower or two. No day at this point looks like a washout, which is great news for the State Fair of West Virginia with high temperatures generally in the mid 80s Thursday, Friday and Saturday – we’ll see you there!
